Allegheny Health Network

Allegheny Health Network (AHN), a Highmark Health Company, is a western Pennsylvania-based integrated healthcare system, that serves patients from across a five-state region that includes Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and New York.

AHN is comprised of 8 hospitals within southwestern Pennsylvania and Westfield, New York. AHN’s flagship hospital on Pittsburgh’s North Side, Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), was founded in 1882 and was among the first in the country to deploy an airborne medical transportation service (LifeFlight). The other hospitals include Allegheny Valley, Canonsburg, Forbes, Jefferson, Saint Vincent, Westfield Memorial, and West Penn. AHN also includes more than 200 primary and specialty care practices. There are approximately 2,400 physicians in every clinical specialty, 19,000 total employees and 2,000 volunteers. AHN serves as a clinical campus for Drexel University College of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine, and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

AHN’s other locations include 6 Urgent + Express Care locations in Braddock, New Kensington, Suburban, Saint Vincent East, Saint Vincent West, and Wexford, four Health + Wellness Pavilions in Bethel Park, Erie West Side, Peters Township, and Wexford, and eight outpatient surgery centers in the North Side, Bethel Park, Jefferson, Monroeville, Peters Township, Saint Vincent, West Penn and Wexford.

AHN just recently opened its newest location, AHN Downtown which offers patients and Highmark employees on-site clinical quality and patient-centered health care services. This center is the first of its kind for downtown Pittsburgh and brings primary care, physical therapy, lab services, executive health, and more to all who live and work downtown.

AHN provides a full spectrum of advanced medical services, including nationally recognized programs for primary and emergency care, cardiovascular disease, cancer care, orthopedic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, women’s health, diabetes and more. It also is home to a comprehensive research institute, an employed physician organization, home- and community-based health services and a group purchasing organization.

AHN and Highmark Health have committed $225 million to enhance cancer care access throughout Western PA.  In 2019, four cancer centers will open in Beaver, Butler, Erie (St. Vincent) and Monroeville (Forbes). The new AHN Cancer Institute Academic Center, located at AGH, will be a state-of-the-art facility and the network’s hub for leading-edge cancer research and complex patient care.

In order to enhance emergency and critical care access for AHN patients and Highmark customers, there will be 4 neighborhood hospitals, AHN Brentwood, AHN Harmar, AHN Hempfield, and AHN McCandless, and two outpatient centers in Waterworks and Westmoreland. 

AHN has also made a $1 billion commitment to build world-class facilities across its entire network and more specifically, investing $115 million in Saint Vincent Hospital and the Erie region. This includes Jefferson Hospital emergency room expansion, Forbes Hospital perioperative center expansion, Emergency Department/Operating Rooms investment at Saint Vincent, AHN Women and Infants Center at Saint Vincent, Health + Wellness Pavilion East Side, the new cancer institute at Saint Vincent, and Westfield Memorial Hospital ED investment.
